IntroductionIt is challenging to assess information on wheelchair access provided by the able-bodied. We do our best to provide as much ancedotal and observational information as possible and will continue adding to this section with useful and verified information.
Accessibility, Nice TownNice town is coastal and therefore largely flat which facilitates wheelchair access rather well. However, 2006 and 2007, see Nice's streets in turmoil with a massive construction project under way to build a new tram system.
This means that the pavements have been narrowed and often left uneven during construction making getting around by wheelchair about as awkward as it could be. It's not all bad news though as it is possible to avoid these areas of construction. The long, smooth Promenade is perfect for 'wheeled promenading'.

Tips: Look for accommodation on the seafront.
The buildings can be newer, with elevators or garden apartments and easy access to the Promenade |
Outdoor LivingOne of the benefits of the beautiful South of France climate is the outdoor living. Being in a wheelchair doesn't mean that you have to miss out on any of the pleasures of being a tourist in Nice. Almost everything in Nice happens outdoors and at street level.
 | Accessibility, Facilities in Nice.Legislation in France does specify that all places visited by the public have got to have wheelchair access bathrooms. Unfortunately it is not much in evidence in many of the older bars and cafes around the city.
On a positive note however, there are public toilets that are wheelchair friendly and most of the restaurants and bars are accessible due to the outdoor nature of the climate. Most of the seating areas are outdoors at street level.
|
Tips: Use the larger hotels facilities.
The hotels tend to have larger bathrooms and are subject to stricter regulations. |
VisibilityA good indicator of Nice's accessibility is visibility. There are plenty of wheelchair users in Nice and awareness is improving year by year. Tourist facilities and activities are included in that. Look in Riviera Rental Guide directory, under Nice-accessibility for contact details of operators.
Accessibility, Beaches in NiceNice beach has good access for wheelchair users. There are signs, marked 'Handiplage', with a wheelchair symbol on them that will tell you exactly where to find it. A ramp stretches down into the centre of the beach so you are not 'parked' on the edge either. It is a stony beach however so substantial beach mats are recommended.
The 'Handiplage' sign also symbolises that the beach is manned and you should be able to get assistance getting in and out of the water.

Tips: Look in Riviera Rental Guide directory.
There are several companies who do car hire for wheelchair users and boat charters too. |
Plage du Centenaire is the name of the 'Handiplage' in Nice. It is manned for assistance from 10.30 to 17.30 and includes facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, showers, specialist beach equipment, ramps, parking and sea access for wheelchair users.
You will find contact details of this in the RG directory under 'Nice - Accessibility' as well as contacts for as many service providers as we can find who cater for disabled holidaymakers on the Riviera. This Information will be continuously updated as we find it and we would be delighted to add user reviews so others can benefit from your experiences. To add a review please join Holiday Central.
