Cannes Lions 2014

Cannes Lions is an annual meeting of professionals, experts and market newcomers from all aspects of the creative communications industry. From established design houses to independent agencies, the festival welcomes around 12, 000 members in a festival of mutual learning, networking and inspiration.

The seven day international event comprises a mix of exhibitions, video screenings, master classes and workshops. There is a special section known as the ‘Young Lions’ where mostly under-30s members can network with peers in a slightly more relaxed setting. The Tuesday night is generally taken up by a Young Lions Party, a social event organised as a more relaxed networking event.

Perhaps the most important part of the Lions event is the daily seminars and talks from industry experts. Over the years these have included a broad array of speakers from many different aspects of the communications industry, who are carefully chosen to give a wide and varied angle on the current state of the market. Previous key note speakers have included Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof, Sean Combs (aka Puff Daddy), Steve Ballmer and Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Another key aspect of the Lions event is the prestigious awards ceremony, rewarding outstanding achievement in advertising and video marketing production. Previous winners of the Advertiser of the Year award have included Volkswagen, Procter & Gamble, Sony, Swatch and Virgin.

Registration for the event usually begins in early January, so it is advised to keep a close eye on the official website for any updates on this. The event is held in the purpose-built Palais des Festivals at the end of the Croisette Boulevard of Cannes, which also holds the vast majority of Cannes’ social and professional events which make up its busy annual calendar.
