The French Riviera has been a haven for artists and art collectors for decades, with the likes of Matisse, Picasso and Chagall being familiar names in villages and cities across the region. Although Monaco is perhaps more often associated with fast cars and casinos, the spectacular principality is becoming a major player in the world of contemporary art. April 2014 sees the return of ‘Art Monaco’, an impressive exhibition of modern art involving live paintings, sales and charity auctions over the course of its 4 day event. In 2013, the city of Monte Carlo enjoyed the impressive collection of Picasso works put on display for an extended period in the summer. This year, it is the turn of the Pinault Collection, one of the largest private contemporary art collections in the world to put selected works on display.
Francois Pinault is a French businessman and art collector who has assembled one of the world’s most substantial contemporary art collections. His works are generally housed in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, but many pieces, as well as many never-before-seen works will be on exhibition in Monte Carlo for much of summer 2014. The works vary from paintings and videos to installations and sculptures which have been gathered from all over the world.
The works are to be exhibited in the stunning Grimaldi Forum, a magnificent conference centre hanging over the Mediterranean Sea and just a few minutes’ walk from the Casino Square and the lively Port area. Riviera Rental Guide has a superb selection of properties in and around Monte-Carlo to accommodate visitors during the wonderfully sunny summer season.
