Cannes Film Festival news 2012

Posted on Thursday, 15 March 2012
Cannes Film Festival news 2012The weather on the French Riviera is warming up and so to is the hype for the 2012 Cannes Film Festival despite the event still being several months off. The president has been decided, Marilyn Monroe's doe eyes peer out from the official poster, the opening film has been announced and slowly news of the 2012 film line up is trickling out.

Last year saw Woody Allen's ode to Paris, 'Midnight in Paris' open proceedings in Cannes 2011 and launch a thoroughly French year in International cinema. His picturesque and gentle film declared his long standing romance with the great city and went onto to win an Oscar for screen writing at the 2012 Oscar ceremony.

Martin Scorsese's visual phenomenon 'Hugo' is also set in Paris and won an Oscar for Cinematography while French actor Jean Dujardin bagged himself the best actor accolade at the Oscars and at the Cannes Film Festival 2011 for his role in the artist.

2012 however may be a return to all things American with the announcement that Wes Andersons 'Moonlight Kingdom' will be the opening offering at this years Cannes Film Festival.

Wes Anderson is a young director from Texas who has brought us interesting, quirky films like the Royal Tenenbaums, The Fantatsic Mr. Fox, Rushmore and The life Aquatic. His rich character based movies attract high praise from some of the greats with Martin Scorsese even suggesting that he is the next Martin Scorsese, high praise indeed.

Moonrise Kingdom will be Andersons first showing at Cannes and stars Bruce Willis, Anderson favourite Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. Set in a New England town in the 1960s the plot is based around the often seen theme of a young girl and boy who fall in love and run away together, although with Wes Anderson you can expect it to be anything but often seen.

It is the second year on the trot that an American director has been selected to open the Cannes Film festival, although Allens love letter to Paris was a pure celebration of the French city, but festival president Gilles Jacob claims, "With Wes Anderson opening the 65th Festival de Cannes, young American cinema will be celebrated on the Croisette."

Also seeing its first light of day will be the latest instalment of the Madagascar movies. The third in the series sees the intrepid New York Zoo residents let loose in the Principality of Monaco which makes the Cannes Film Festival première a nice touch.

The 2012 Cannes Film festival opens on 16th May. For Cannes Film Festival accommodation please see all our Cannes holiday rentals or contact us for a more bespoke service.
