 The annual Rose ball charity event in Monaco will have an English theme this year but the live music choices are less English Rose and more thorn in your side. Pete Doherty, former frontman with Baby Shambles and The Libertines, wild man of rock and self confessed heroin addict has been invited to headline the event.
Doherty has a reputation for bailing out of gigs or just not showing up but he successfully played in Monte Carlo in September of last year. His groggy, shambolic appearance raised a few eyebrows in the uber groomed atmosphere of Monaco where local police have the authority to escort you to the border if your attire is not up to scratch but he was booked, he showed up and he played, which was serious progress for the troubled rock poet.
Doherty claims to have cleaned up his act, "stopped injecting heroin" and is keen to team up with his Baby Shambles band mates again. The singer performer was deeply affected by the death of his friend and fellow addict Amy Winehouse and perhaps this, along with a new relationship and a baby on the way, has prompted a fresh start for the singer.
Also on the line up for the Rose Ball is Anglo American singer/producer Mark Ronson, Miles Kaine and Irish singing sensation Imelda May.
The event will be attended by all the Royal family this year and will no doubt be a glittering night of fund raising and fun.
The Rose Ball takes place in Monaco every year and raises funds for the Princess Grace charitable foundation.
