The French Riviera, of which Monaco is a part, was initially made famous as a Winter holiday resort. In the 1950's the South of France became particularly endeared to the Hollywood set and American literati who much preferred it as a summer jet set location with its luxury apartments, villas and yachts to rent. |
| All Year Long |
Monaco's popularity grew with Prince Rainier III at the helm and his marriage to Grace Kennedy raised the worlds consciousness of the Principality. Monaco with its unique tax laws began to attract a very wealthy clientele who liked to pass the summers there.
|
Nowadays, with its new 90 million Euro cruise-ship-friendly sea wall and glittering schedule of social events, Monaco is a good place to be all year round.

| MOnaco in Spring |
Springtime in Monaco is probably the best time to visit. The summer crowds have not yet arrived, the weather is fresh and warm and the landscape is blooming into colourful life after the mild Winter. There is that springtime 'newness' to everything and a sense of preparation for things to come. |
May is a particularly fun month as it marks the start of the season in the Mediterranean. The superyachts begin to arrive, the streets start to buzz and there are lots of events and celebrations scheduled.
The Monaco Formula One Grand Prix falls in this month as does the
Cannes film festival. It's a time that everyone who is anyone is in town and it's worth being there simply for the atmosphere alone. Even if you have no interest in racing, the Monaco race is such an incredible spectacle that it's a sight, (and sound), to behold. Other springtime events to look out for are The Tennis Masters in April and the Rose Ball in March.
| Monaco in Summer |
The arrival of summer sees the influx of most of Monaco's foreign residents. There is a real party atmosphere in the city and the good humour seems to permeate everything. Everywhere is busy but for some reason nowhere ever seems to get particularly overcrowded. |
Monaco's events calendar is jam packed with entertainment. There is a fun fair and amusments down in the Port d'Hercule, summer concerts in Le Palais Princier, the International Fireworks Competition throughout July and August, concerts scheduled in Le Sporting, the Monte Carlo Television Festival , the Red Cross Ball and, in September, the International yacht Show. For events listings and
relevant property rentals look in the 'Riviera Life' section.
| Monaco in Winter |
Winter in Monaco is a quiet time. There are fewer tourists and all is calm around the streets. The weather is usually mild and sunny days with clear blue skies and cold fresh nights. What is happily missing is wind and rain, a lethal combination as any Northern European will tell you. |
Christmas is a particularly beautiful time when the whole country goes to town with their decorations, don't let anyone ever tell you that they don't celebrate christmas in France or Monaco. Red carpets are rolled out on the pavements, the outside of the shops are decked out in flowers and baubles and decorations. Speakers play seasonal music and everywhere is lit with a thousand fairy lights.
The Casino Square Christmas tree is always a sight to behold and, in addition to being close to the ski stations there are plenty of activities in town too. Ice skating in the port, a christmas fair with wooden chalet shopping stalls and hot wine and chocolate. In 2006 real igloos were constructed and a team of huskies on hand for petting. Other Winter events to keep an eye for are the Monte Carlo Rally, the International Circus Festival, the Monaco dance Forum and the Antique Jewelery and Arts festival.
