The city of Cannes, synonymous with glamour, celebrity lifestyle and international festivals, is the French Riviera’s haven of class and style. Whether it’s the 37 beach restaurants which cater for all tastes, the wide array of luxury brand boutiques, or simply the more tranquil Riviera way of life that entices you, Cannes has a great deal to offer its visitors.
Hugging the crescent-shaped bay with its magnificent golden-sand beaches is the legendary 'Boulevard de la Croisette'. For eleven days of the year, its promenade is lit up with camera flashes as the planet’s biggest movie stars disembark for the Cannes Film Festival, however, this is just one of the huge events that colour the city’s social calendar. Outside of festival season, visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the seafront, admire the splendid yachts that decorate the city’s Old Port, and explore Cannes’ picturesque Old quarter, 'La Suquet', which offers a quaint historical side of life compared to the glitz of the lively Croisette.
For those in search of some real tranquillity, one must look no further than the beautiful two Lérins Islands, situated just a half-mile off-shore from the city. Loaded with history (where the Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century), the islands also boast magnificent walks and wildlife as well as the impressive Fortified Monastery on the smaller of the two islands.
With its typically Mediterranean climate, the sun, sand and sea are certainly a big part of the Cannois lifestyle, however for the rare cloudy day, the city also boasts some fine museums. From photography to perfume, marine life to art history, the city holds a bit of something for everyone.
Just a short bus or train ride from Cannes, the neighbouring town of Antibes, with its quaint cobblestone streets, or Juan-les-Pins with its bustling nightlife and beaches, also make Cannes a great base for exploring the Riviera further.
Back in Cannes for the evening, one cannot leave without sampling its world-famous nightlife, with late bars and clubs where locals and visitors can dance until dawn to famous DJ’s and live music alike.
