The International Dance Festival in Cannes is a biennial event that was created by the city of Cannes to showcase talent in the dance world. Each event has several world premières, new French names and Internationally recognised stars. It is a collection of established and up and coming stars and companies with a focus on contemporary dance.
The event is staged by the Palais des Festivals in Cannes under the stewardship of Rosella Hightower and this years event, which runs from the 19th of November until 24th November, sees the return of Belgian artistic director, Frédéric Flamand. Flamand, also director of National Ballet of Marseilles, is set to be at the reins for this, his second year as artistic director, before passing the role on to another artistic director in 2015.
After 2011's theme of 'New Mythologies', this year builds on this with a reflection on the relationship between man and machine, with one particular section integrating robots into the choreography.
" The new mythologies are all about how old myths are reinterpreted in our contemporary world of emerging technologies and where image is king. Starting from the viewpoint that Cannes is the mythical town of images, I was interested in questioning the living body and the art of choreography in our world in full transition of pleasures and perceptions around a common theme", explains Flamand, "The sum of all the information and all the stories circulating in the media creates a mythological effect."
The 2013 Programme sees dance companies from Marseilles, Paris, New York, China, Canada and Belgium take to the stage with a multitude of dancers.
Tickets can be bought from Palais des Festivals in person, by phone or online. Buy 'passports' for the entire festival from €100. Find full details for this event online on
