Celebrating its 10th year of existence, Nice’s already legendary Iron Man competition takes place again in 2014 under the Riviera sunshine of the month of June. With each year becoming more popular than the one before, this year’s event will surely be no different as up to 3000 competitors line up to take on the ultimate test in endurance in a truly spectacular setting.
Iron Man is a triathlon developed to push athletes to the extreme. Like a traditional triathlon, it consists of three sports – swimming, cycling and running. The difference with IM is the distances. Firstly athletes take on a 3.8km swim in sea water. Upon completing this, within the time restriction, they take on a gruelling 180km cycle. If this wasn’t enough, they top it all off with a full-length marathon on foot. Finishing times range from 8 to 16 hours overall so Iron Man is generally reserved for only the most committed of athletes.
Nice’s race begins on the city’s famous beaches as athletes jostle for position to take on the first leg in the Mediterranean Sea. The cycle takes them up into the back hills of Nice which include some challenging climbs. Not an easy feat in itself by any standards. Finally, the Promenade des Anglais is the setting for the marathon which consists of several lengths of the picturesque seafront. The cooler sea air and the flat surface is no doubt a welcome terrain for the final leg.
The breathtaking scenery all along the course of the race makes it not only a memorable event for the athletes, but also a fantastic day of sporting action for spectators too. Given the size and duration of the race, crowds have plenty of opportunity to get up close to cheer on the courageous competitors and it goes without saying that the weekend of the event is a great time to see Nice in all its glory.
2014’s Iron Man takes place on the 29th of June, and accommodation around the dates of the event fill up quickly. Be sure to check out Riviera Rental Guide’s excellent range of properties in and around Nice and let us help you find what you’re looking for.
