It is not quite the start that everyone expects when they arrive on the 'sunny' South of France coast. A soggy red carpet and a rethink on the fashion accessories, do Dior make umbrellas? But the show must go on and it is not the first time that attendees have faced such deluges, either from the weather or the critics.
The Great Gatsby opened the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and received a muted response as it has done in the United States already. Baz Lurhman was handling the criticism well drawing on the experiences of the great novelist himself.
"When Fitzgerald died, his book was horribly criticised," he said. "He had very mixed reviews. Some extremely cruel. Some of the grand critics called him a clown. Fitzgerald had to suffer much crueller and more ill-informed criticisms than I have".
The weather nor the reviews fazed the waiting fans who braved the rain to see the cast arriving, Leonardo Di Caprio, Carey Mulligan and of course the director himself.
The fashion stakes were as high as ever with Cindy Crawford showing that she can still turn heads and Nicole Kidman still appeared to be bathed in summer sun despite its absence.
Fashion 'model de jour', Cara Delevigne also wowed on the red carpet taking her fashion cues from The Great Gatsby no less in a black Burberry lace dress. The dress code was naturally top notch with Carey Mulligan in pink Dior Couture, Isla Fischer in Oscar de la Renta, Frida Pinto in flaming pink Gucci, Florence Welsch in quiry Miu Miu, Naoimie Harris in shimmering Calvin and Crawford and Jagger working the South of France favourite, Roberto Cavalli.
Lets hope that the sun is inspired to shine by these dazzling Hollywood ladies. |
