The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. It is frequented by all the Hollywood greats and anyone trying to make a name for themselves in the movie business is present and accounted for in Cannes, if they really mean business.
This year the president of the jury will be none other than cinematic giant Steven Spielberg. Spielberg has been asked to preside over the jury on more than one occasion but his prolific filming schedule has always prohibited him from taking up the role in the past. His schedule however, for 2013, stands clear and he is delighted to take on the mantel.
"I've often asked Steven to be jury president", says Giles Jacob, President of the Festival de Cannes, "but he has always been shooting a film. So when this year I was told "E.T. phone home", I understood immediately and replied, "At last!"
Spielberg may not have ever been president of the jury before but he is a regular visitor to Cannes, his first sojourn here was 31 years ago with the début of E.T. A memorable experience for the director and a ground breaking film for the public.
Spielberg has made 27 films in his 40 year career, many of them landmark films that have broken records and cinematic ground; E.T. Jaws, The Colour Purple, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Schindlers List, Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan and most recently, Oscar nominated film, Lincoln, to name just some of his well known box office hits.
He is a fitting president for this prestigious event and follows in the footsteps of other cinematic legends; Robert DeNiro, Tim Burton, Isabelle Huppert, Sean Penn, Stephen Frears, Quentin Tarantino amongst others.
The 66th Cannes Film Festival will commence on 15th May 2013 and conclude on 26th May 2013.
